In this image Andy Warhol captures artist and social activist Keith Haring, whose work responded to the New York City street culture of the 1980s alongside an unidentified fashion model. In this candidly framed shot, Haring stares directly into the eyes of the viewer while the model does not engage the camera. Haring is wearing a sweatshirt featuring his own artwork and heavy rimmed glasses. In stark contrast, the model is dressed in formal attire replete with a double string of pearls around her neck. Haring and Warhol were close friends—Warhol was the subject of several of Haring’s images—and their friendship was a factor in the early success of Haring’s work.
