'Wandering Forms, Works from 1959-1979'

Wendell Castle’s exploration of form and function blurs the boundaries between art, craft and design and has changed the way we look at furniture today.

The first major investigation into his iconic and groundbreaking early work in more than 20 years, this exhibition surveys the renowned American designer’s wood and fiberglass objects, and presents related materials from his archives.

The handmade pieces created by Wendell Castle in Rochester, New York, helped shape the American studio furniture movement throughout the 1960s and 1970s, and he remains one of the most important American furniture makers working today.

"Wandering Forms" includes a variety of furniture pieces from chairs and tables to lighting and the intricate drawings from Castle’s archives.

Credits

This exhibition originated at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum to coincide with Castle’s 80th birthday and was organized by curator Evan Snyderman and Aldrich executive director Alyson Baker. It was designed by Cooper Joseph Studio.

Museum Admission

The exhibition, public dialogue and reception are free for all SCAD students, faculty, staff and museum members. Open to the public with the cost of museum admission.
