Enjoy a panel discussion that brings together three exceptional voices — Natasha Becker, Joeonna Bellorado-Samuels and Cecile Winckler — who are forging new models in the art and creative fields. Challenging the status quo and establishment, these individuals are creating new spaces with an entrepreneurial spirit and radical ways of thinking and doing. This panel is moderated by Storm Janse van Rensburg, head curator of SCAD Exhibitions.
Becker is co-founder of Assembly Room, a collective that invites female curators to collaborate, come together, break rules and defy the status quo while creating compelling art, exhibitions and experiences.
"(Assembly Room) signifies a space that is not only collective, but also educational and political — a space where work is done. This collective aspect clearly builds on earlier feminist art initiatives such as the 1972 Womanhouse, but Assembly Room differentiates itself by focusing on carving out space for female curators rather than female artists." – Hyperallergic
Bellorado-Samuels is a director at Jack Shainman Gallery, New York, and founder of We Buy Gold, a roving gallery/concept that presents exhibitions and breaks the mold of the white cube.
"Unconfined by the art world establishment, it (We Buy Gold) provides space for emerging and mid-career artists, of color or not. Working outside the limited perspective of a predominantly white art world, spaces like hers effectively broaden it." – T: The New York Times Style Magazine
Winckler is co-founder of Unemployed magazine, which provides a platform for creatives who are out of work or between jobs.
"Unemployed magazine … is breathing new life into the print industry with its unabashed perspective. Cheeky and always up for a good time, the digital and print publication offers a platform for artists to indulge in their creative whims while producing meaningful and challenging work." – Live Fast magazine
