Join renowned New York-based conceptual artist Sanford Biggers, one of the most relevant voices in contemporary art and the 2021 SCAD deFINE ART honoree, for his keynote lecture. Biggers delves into his life story, key influences and references, and important moments in his prolific career.
Biggers’ solo exhibition Contra/Diction at the SCAD Museum of Art’s Walter O. Evans Center for African American Studies brings together works from the past 20 years of his practice. Beyond its compelling visual potency, Biggers’ work is a visceral experience and a call to combat racial injustices that threaten the lives of Black Americans. His works are a cleaving of references from myriad domains including European Modernism, traditional African sculpture, Buddhism, and the American histories of the Underground Railroad and the Black Power movement.
This event is open to the public. It is presented on the occasion of SCAD deFINE ART 2021, as part of the SCAD virtual series Guests and Gusto.
